What is Chong Lou incense?

"Chong Lou" (insect-bored) agarwood refers to the resinous wood formed when an *Aquilaria* tree secretes resin to naturally protect a wound caused by insect boring; the damaged area becomes encased in this naturally secreted resin, resulting in this specific type of agarwood.

It is also known as "Chong Yan" (insect-eye)—a term that perhaps offers a more vivid description—referring to the resinous formation surrounding the holes or tunnels gnawed by insects. Because the insects secrete acidic substances while gnawing, the resulting resin tends to have a sweeter aroma. Beyond this sweetness, the scent profile is remarkably rich and dynamic, embodying the highly prized "sweet and cool" character of agarwood—a lingering, melodious fragrance that leaves a memorable impression.

This agarwood is found across various production regions, with Hainan being the most renowned; indeed, this type of resin formation—caused by insect activity—is the most common form of agarwood development in Hainan.
