This Jingdezhen artwork gaiwan is handpainted with Chinese phoenix and auspicious clouds by a Jingdezhen experienced ceramic painter, Cao Yi.

The phoenix pattern is one of the traditional Chinese patterns/totems, often appearing on traditional Chinese clothing and ritual vessels. The phoenix is the king of birds, so it represents auspiciousness, good wishes, harmony, immortality and rebirth. The phoenix pattern is flying with wings spread out, which is particularly beautiful and energetic. Therefore, the ancient Chinese often said, "When the phoenix flies and sings, the world will be peaceful."

"Blue and white porcelain" (Chinese: 青花; pinyin: qīng-huā; lit. 'Blue flowers/patterns') covers a wide range of white pottery and porcelain decorated under the glaze with a blue pigment, generally cobalt blue pigment.
