What's Batik?

1.  Batik is an ancient traditional textile printing and dyeing handicraft of China's ethnic minorities, formerly known as "wax-resist dyeing." It is considered one of the four major ancient Chinese printing techniques, along with tie-dyeing, openwork printing, and clamp dyeing. As a national intangible cultural heritage, it is not only a "wordless history book" for ethnic minorities such as the Miao and Buyi, but also uses natural indigo and beeswax to condense landscapes, plants, myths, and legends onto fabric.

2. Pattern Aesthetics: The beauty of batik lies in the profound meaning behind the patterns. Butterflies symbolize the creation myth of "Butterfly Mother," fish patterns pray for numerous offspring, dragon patterns symbolize warding off misfortune and welcoming good fortune... The random cracks in the blue background and white flowers add a touch of dynamism, making each piece a unique work of art.

3. Process Steps

Painting with Wax: Melt beeswax in a copper knife and outline the pattern on pure cotton cloth, the lines must be drawn in one stroke.
Dyeing: Repeatedly immerse in an indigo vat, the dye and wax layer interact to create varying shades of blue.
Dewaxing: Boil water to remove the beeswax, and white patterns gradually appear;
Drying: After dewaxing, wash away the excess wax and dry in the sun.

Tips

These are handmade wax-painted items; each piece is an original creation by the artist, making it impossible for every item to have the same pattern.

Dye conditions in the dye vats at different times cannot be completely uniform, therefore, there will be some color difference between each item. The hand-dyeing process retains the characteristic of uneven coloring, resulting in different shades. If there is localized yellowing, it is due to oxidation and can be removed by washing.

All dyeing uses plant-based dyes, with no added chemical auxiliaries. The dyed fabric has a soft color, a skin-friendly texture, and a herbal scent. Due to the nature of natural dyes, some color bleeding during washing is normal.

During washing, please avoid washing with white clothing. When drying, please place in a cool, ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight. Please hand wash only, do not dry clean.

During storage, please hang the garment to dry. Plant-based dyes will continue to oxidize upon contact with air; long-term folding may cause color differences and creases.
