Hand Painted Chinese Cabbage Enamel Gaiwan Jingdezhen Master Ceramic Artwork

This Jingdezhen artwork gaiwan is painted with Chinese cabbage, rice ears and is made by Jingdezhen experienced ceramic craftsman. 

Cabbage, which is homophonic to the Chinese word for "baicai 百财", means to attract wealth, gather wealth and keep wealth. Cabbage has green leaves and white roots, which also means innocence, steadfastness and purity. The huge cabbage is on the ground, with distinct stems and leaves, full of vitality. A cricket is leisurely pacing at the root of the cabbage, and the cricket is painted vividly; rice ears, peppers, mushrooms and other crops are all shown in the painting, which also means harvest and abundance.

Enamel color has the characteristics of thick, bright, opaque and rich layers, has a strong three-dimensional effect, and has the texture of an oil painting.

During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), French metal enamel craftsmanship was introduced to China. Later, through the innovation of Chinese craftsmen, Chinese mineral pigments were used and replaced with porcelain bodies, forming enamel-colored porcelain. Enamel-colored porcelain is an overglaze color (on-glaze decoration), After firing, the enamel-colored porcelain will feel convex to the touch.

A fully finished enamel artwork is usually fired five or six times.

The turquoise part is made of colored glaze, and there is a maker's stamp on the bottom of the gaiwan.
