What is Purple Bud?
As early as the Tang Dynasty(618 to 907 CE), Lu Yu highly praised purple buds as a tribute tea for their noble fragrance and fresh taste. In Lu Yu's Tea Classic, it was proposed that purple buds are the best, green buds are the second, and wild buds are the third.
It is a mutant variety caused by natural gene mutation due to many factors such as geographical environment, climate, and season, sunshine etc. Usually grown in sunny valleys or cliffs, due to more sunshine, which leads to a relative reduction in chlorophyll and the formation of purple bud variation. This characteristic of purple bud tea often makes it have a mellower and more unique flavor in taste.
Its internal structure contains sweet sugars, proteins, vitamins, lipids, anthocyanins, and tea saponins. Therefore, this type of tea has a noble fragrance, a lovely and refreshing taste, a thick fragrance, and a strong flavor.
What's Gongmei, also called Cai Cha White Tea?
The biggest difference between Gongmei and other white teas is the tree species.
Gongmei is an independent tree species. Only tea made from the group species Cai Cha can be called Gongmei, while Fuding Silver Needle White Tea ( Baihao Yinzhen), White Peony (Baimudan), and Shoumei are all made from Fuding Dabai or Fuding Dahao.
Cai Cha is the earliest raw material for making white tea, followed by cultivated tree species such as Narcissus Bai, Dabaicha, and Dahaocha. The characteristic of Gongmei is that it reproduces sexually, that is, it reproduces by sowing seeds, while the raw materials of Fuding Dabaicha and Dahaocha are planted by the asexual propagation cuttage.
