Blue and white underglaze red porcelain, commonly known as "blue and white plus purple", is a decorative technique of underglaze colored porcelain in Chinese ceramic art. It refers to a porcelain decoration technique of adding patterns with underglaze red between blue and white. It began in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD), more than 700 years ago.

Blue and white underglaze red porcelain refers to underglaze colored porcelain that is painted with blue and white (cobalt oxide as a colorant) and underglaze red (copper as a colorant) on the porcelain body, and then covered with transparent glaze and fired in a high-temperature reducing atmosphere in the kiln. The craft foundation of this variety is based on the decorative craft characteristics of the two underglaze colored ceramics, "blue and white" and "underglaze red".

Blue and white refers to the use of blue and white material, i.e. cobalt oxide, as a pigment to depict patterns, and then apply transparent glaze, and then fire at more than 1200℃ (2192℉).
Underglaze red is one of the traditional underglaze color decoration techniques in China. It uses copper as a colorant to draw various patterns on the body, and then applies transparent glaze and fires it in a high-temperature reducing atmosphere. The red pattern is revealed in the glaze, so it is called "underglaze red". Because it is very difficult to fire qualified products, its products are extremely valuable. Underglaze red can be decorated alone, but most of them are combined with blue and white for decoration and are called "blue and white underglaze red". Its characteristics not only have the characteristics of "elegant, calm and stable" of blue and white porcelain, but also add the richness and magnificence of underglaze red, enrich the color effect, and form an elegant and simple artistic style. Therefore, blue and white underglaze red porcelain has become one of China's precious porcelain varieties.
